It depends on the dryer type rather than on whether it is stacked. A conventional vented dryer expels hot moist air through ducting to the outside and needs a vent run regardless of its position. Ventless dryers, which are either condenser or heat pump designs, extract moisture into a collection tank or drain instead, and require no external duct. That makes ventless models the usual answer for apartments, interior closets, and anywhere ducting is impossible. The trade-offs are real: ventless cycles commonly run longer, heat pump models cost more up front while typically using less energy, and condenser models can warm the room they are in.

Is a stacking kit universal?

No, and treating one as universal is the most common serious mistake in this category. Kits are made for specific model pairings and are sold by the manufacturer or an approved supplier for that combination. The kit does more than sit between the machines: it aligns the cabinets, spreads the dryer's weight, and anchors the upper machine so spin vibration cannot walk it forward. A generic bracket, a sheet of plywood, or the assumption that the dryer's own feet are enough all fail the same way, and the failure mode is an appliance coming off a washer at head height. Confirm the correct kit part number against your exact model numbers before buying either machine.

Can I stack a washer and dryer myself?

Physically it is possible with two capable people, and manufacturers publish instructions, but there are good reasons many buyers pay for installation. A dryer commonly weighs somewhere in the illustrative region of 100 to 150 pounds and has to be lifted to chest height and lowered precisely onto brackets. The washer must be level first, because stacking on an unlevel machine amplifies vibration considerably. Water, drain, electrical and, on vented models, duct connections all have to be made and tested. If the dryer is gas, the connection is work for a qualified professional in most jurisdictions. Where the installation is included or cheap, it is usually money well spent.

Do stacked machines vibrate more?

They can, and the cause is almost always installation rather than the arrangement itself. A washer that is not perfectly level transmits far more movement, and with a dryer bolted on top that movement has more mass and more leverage behind it. Getting the washer level on all four feet, with the locking nuts tightened, is the single most important step in a stacked installation. Floor type matters too: a suspended timber floor flexes in a way a concrete slab does not. Removing the shipping bolts from a new washer before first use is essential and, when forgotten, produces dramatic vibration that gets misattributed to the stacking.

Is a washer dryer combo better than a stacked pair?

They solve different problems. An all-in-one combo washes and dries in a single drum, needs only one set of connections, is usually ventless, and fits where nothing else will. The costs are throughput and time: a combined cycle commonly takes considerably longer than washing and drying separately, drying capacity is usually smaller than washing capacity so a full wash load may need splitting to dry, and you cannot wash a second load while the first dries. For one or two people in a small flat, a combo is often the right answer. For a household doing several loads a week, a stacked pair almost always wins on time.
