How much does it cost to run a washing machine? The short answer

The cost to run a washing machine is the sum of three things: the electricity the motor uses to fill, tumble, and spin, the water the load draws, and, only for a warm or hot wash, the energy to heat that water. For an efficient machine that works out to roughly $0.25 a cold load, about $0.46 warm, and about $0.67 hot at a typical $0.16 electricity rate and a typical $0.015-per-gallon water rate, illustratively. At five loads a week that is somewhere between about $5 and $14 a month, and between about $65 and $175 a year, depending almost entirely on the temperature you wash at.

What surprises people is how little of that belongs to the machine. The motor that spins a full drum for half an hour uses only a few cents of electricity, less than running a lightbulb for an evening. Nearly all of the difference between a cheap wash and an expensive one is the hot water, because heating water takes far more energy than moving a drum. Add them and you have the cost of one load.

The first piece is the motor and controls. The washer draws roughly 0.1 to 0.2 kilowatt-hours to run a full cycle, call it 0.15, so at a $0.16 rate that is about two or three cents. This part is the same whether you wash cold or hot, and it is small. The second piece is the water: an efficient front-loader uses about 15 gallons a load, and at a combined water and sewer rate near $0.015 a gallon that is about $0.22. The third piece is the water heating, and it appears only if you wash warm or hot. Raising the temperature of the wash water takes real energy, roughly 1.3 kilowatt-hours for a warm load and 2.6 for a hot one, which at $0.16 adds about $0.21 or $0.42 to the load.

The electricity a washing machine draws

Ask how much electricity a washing machine uses and the honest answer is: almost none, until you heat the water. The machine’s own motor, pump, and electronics use somewhere around 0.1 to 0.2 kilowatt-hours to run a full cycle, filling the drum, tumbling for the wash and rinse, and spinning at the end. That is a few cents at a typical rate, in the same range as running a modern television for an evening. A washer, in other words, is not a heavy electrical load the way a dryer or a space heater is.

The number changes completely when the load calls for warm or hot water. Most washing machines do not heat water themselves; they draw hot water from your home’s water heater, the same tank that feeds your shower. Heating water is energy-intensive: raising the temperature of the several gallons a warm or hot wash uses can take 1.3 to 2.6 kilowatt-hours, which is ten to twenty times what the motor uses. So a cold wash uses a trickle of electricity and a hot wash uses a real amount, and the difference is entirely the heater, not the washer.

One wrinkle matters for your bill. If your water heater runs on gas rather than electricity, the heating cost lands on your gas bill instead of your electricity bill, and gas is usually a cheaper source of heat. The wash still costs more hot than cold; the cost just shows up in a different place. The water a washing machine uses per load

Water is the cost people forget, because it arrives on a separate bill and is priced by the gallon rather than the kilowatt-hour. A modern high-efficiency front-load washer uses roughly 13 to 15 gallons for a full load. A high-efficiency top-loader uses somewhat more, and an older conventional top-loader, the kind that fills the whole tub to submerge the clothes, can use 30 to 40 gallons for the same load. That is a two-to-threefold spread in water use between an efficient machine and a thirsty one.

At a combined water and sewer rate near $0.015 a gallon, illustratively, 15 gallons is about $0.22 and 35 gallons is about $0.53. That water cost is paid on every wash, cold or hot, which is why an old top-loader costs more to run even before any heating is counted: it simply moves more water. The lever here is load size, not the machine. A washer uses close to its rated water whether the drum is half full or full, so running full loads spreads that fixed water cost across more clothes. On a hot wash the heating slice dwarfs the machine's own electricity. On a cold wash the heating slice disappears entirely, and only the water and the sliver of motor cost remain.

The point of the split is that the thing labelled washing machine, the motor, is the thinnest slice on the chart. Nearly two-thirds of a hot wash is the water heater doing its work, and another third is the water itself. Turn the temperature down to cold and the whole heating segment vanishes, taking most of the cost with it and leaving just the water plus a few cents of motor. Notice what stays constant and what changes. The motor cost, about two cents, and the water cost, about $0.22, are the same on every row, because you draw the same water and spin the same drum regardless of temperature. Everything that moves down the column is heating. A cold wash is essentially the water bill plus a rounding error; a sanitary cycle more than triples the total by adding a big slug of heating energy on top.

Does hot water cost more to wash? Cold vs warm vs hot

Yes, hot water costs more to wash, and by a wide margin. This is the most important running-cost fact about a washing machine, so it is worth stating plainly: the difference between a cold wash and a hot wash is almost entirely the energy to heat the water, and that energy dwarfs everything else the machine does. Going from cold to warm roughly doubles the cost of a load; going from cold to hot roughly triples it. The clothes come out the same in most cases, because the detergent, not the temperature, does the cleaning on everyday laundry.

The reason is physics, not machine design. Water resists changing temperature, so raising several gallons from tap-cold to hot takes far more energy than the motor uses to move the drum for the whole cycle. That is why the temperature dial, not the wattage label, is the real cost control on a washer. A modern detergent is formulated to dissolve and lift soils in cold water, so for typical loads, everyday clothes, lightly soiled items, colors you want to protect, cold is not a compromise. The bars scale with the heating, because the water and motor costs are identical on every row. The cold bar is close to the floor a washer can reach, since you still have to draw and spin the water. Each step up adds heating and nothing else. HE front-load vs top-load efficiency

Not every machine costs the same to run at a given temperature, and the difference comes down to water. A high-efficiency front-load washer tumbles clothes through a shallow pool of water rather than submerging them, so it uses only about 13 to 15 gallons a load. A high-efficiency top-loader with no center agitator uses somewhat more. An older conventional top-loader fills the tub to cover the clothes and can use 30 to 40 gallons. Since water is a cost on every wash and, for warm and hot loads, more water means more water to heat, the thirsty machine costs more twice over.

Work it through on a hot wash, illustratively. An efficient front-loader heating about 15 gallons lands near $0.67 a load. On cold washes the gap is smaller but still real, driven purely by the extra water. A washing machine almost never works alone. For most loads it hands off to a dryer, and the two together are the real cost of doing laundry, which is why pricing the washer in isolation understates the trip. Here is the striking part: the dryer usually costs several times more to run than the washer. A standard electric dryer uses about 3 kilowatt-hours to dry a load, roughly $0.48 at a typical rate, as we work out in full in our dryer running-cost lab report. The washer on a cold cycle costs about $0.25. So the cheap-to-run partner is the washer, and the dryer is where the laundry money actually goes.

Add them and a cold-wash, standard-dry load costs about $0.73, of which the dryer is roughly two-thirds. Wash hot and the pair reaches about $1.15 a load. Over a year of five loads a week, the washer contributes somewhere near $65 to $175 depending on temperature, while the dryer alone contributes about $125, so the combined laundry bill lands in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars a year for a typical household. Seeing the pair together reframes where to look for savings: the dryer is the larger target, and anything the washer does to send clothes there less wet pays off twice.

That last point is the link between the two machines. A washer that spins clothes drier, which efficient front-loaders do best, cuts the minutes the dryer’s heater has to run, trimming the larger of the two bills. Whether washing at night is cheaper

Washing at night is cheaper only if your electricity plan charges less at night, and for many households it does not. On a standard flat-rate plan, every kilowatt-hour costs the same at 3am as it does at 6pm, so shifting the wash to the small hours changes nothing on the bill. The washer does not know or care what time it is; only the meter’s pricing does.

Where night washing pays is on a time-of-use or off-peak tariff. These plans divide the day into expensive peak hours and cheaper off-peak hours, often overnight and sometimes midday, and the price gap between them can be large. If you are on such a plan, running the washer during the cheap window lowers the cost of any load that uses electricity, and the effect is biggest on warm and hot washes drawing on an electric water heater, because those are the loads with real kilowatt-hours to shift. So the honest answer depends on your tariff, not on the machine. Check your electricity plan for peak and off-peak windows before rearranging your laundry around the clock. If you have them, batch your warm and hot loads into the cheap hours and let the water heater recover overnight. An ENERGY STAR washing machine is certified to beat federal minimums on both water and energy use, and both of those show up in the running cost. It uses less water per load, which trims the water bill on every wash and, on warm and hot loads, leaves less water to heat. It also extracts more water on a faster final spin, so clothes arrive at the dryer drier and the dryer runs less. The per-load saving is modest but compounding. The electricity rate drives the heating cost, so it matters most on warm and hot washes; the water rate drives the water cost, so it matters on every load including cold. Tips that actually cut a washing machine’s running cost

If you want to trim what the washer costs, the levers are few and they follow straight from the three-part cost. Here they are in rough order of impact, none of which asks you to buy a new machine.

  • Wash cold whenever the load allows. This is the big one. Cold skips the water heating entirely, cutting a hot wash by roughly two-thirds, and modern detergent cleans everyday laundry well without heat. Reserve warm and hot for genuinely soiled or sanitize loads.

  • Keep an eye on the water rate, not just the power rate. In areas with pricey water and sewer, full loads and an efficient machine matter more, because the water is a bigger share of every wash.
